Modernism inside the landscape
Born in Colombo in 1919 (then British Ceylon), Bawa studied law in London before turning to architecture at the Architectural Association and returning in 1957. He wove Sri Lanka’s climate, terrain, and planting into a modern language—tropical modernism. Lunuganga was a lifelong garden-house; Heritance Kandalama and Jetwing Lighthouse remain places you can stay overnight. Died in 2003.
